Alice in Wonderland: A lavish first birthday

You know those parties that you see on Instagram or Pinterest that make you stop and say “WOW”.. and then you screen snapshot every pic of it or pin it like a crazy person. This is that party.

We were falling down the rabbit hole of Instagram when we stumbled across super styling party mamma Elizabeth Sergi (@lizzy06). Her feed was full of absolutely gorgeous pics of family celebrations from the Mother’s Day brekkie table to family milestone birthdays. This lady was the epitome of our motto “Life Is A Party”. The ultimate muse.

As fate would have it, we reached out to say “hi” right as Elizabeth was planning her beautiful daughters first birthday party. Very soon she’d enlisted our services to bring her Alice in Wonderland theme to life on paper with custom invitations.

First birthdays are fast becoming the new milestone birthday. And for little girls, a plethora of pink and gold party ideas and party styling are about.

With never ending inspiration for a first birthday, Elizabeth had a her pick of options to select from when choosing a theme for Giselle’s party. As she was turning one, she decided for a quirky take on a classic and created an Alice in ONEderland version of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Our brief for the invitation was to include whimsical and quirky little pictures to suit the Alice theme with pink card and gold foil. Pink and gold is a firm Danger & Moon fave, so we happily set about drawing little doodles and drawing script fonts to our hearts content. Yep, we’re major font geeks!

The main font for Giselle’s invite was then brought to life 3D style with a to-die-for ply sign custom created by Comminucake It and nestled amongst the bushes in the party set up. We may have squealed a little when we saw the pictures.

Customising your event stationery adds a personal touch to your party. Every guest’s name was tied to their invitation with “Open Me” then tied around the envelope. Cupcake flags to match the invitations were handmade by us proclaiming “Eat Me” and “Giselle” in honour of the birthday girl.

Turning to Pinterest and Instagram , Elizabeth built on the Alice In Wonderland theme. Using the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party scene, she set about sourcing party ware, decorations and supplies. Mix n matched plates, cups and napkins were layered together and set on the table. When styling we highly recommend to layer, layer, layer for maximum impact.

When planning a party, budget is always top of every hosts mind. Where she could save money, Elizabeth exploited her natural talents and made all the desserts and birthday cakes. And the result was breath taking!

When looking to save a sneaky dollar, Elizabeth’s top tip is to have a go at making something if you can’t find exactly what you are after. She also made some decorations and props herself for some DIY party fun. Handy hubby also made the tables and log seats. Making things you know you can nail saves money for the things where you know you’ll need a professional hand (hey, we’re not all blesses with the baking gene!)

The party was held at the Sergi family home with their nearest and dearest attending. Having recently launched her event styling business, Florence Knows, we asked Elizabeth for her styling tip “You can style a great party with any budget. You just need a good eye for detail.”

Throwing a good-looking party is one thing, keeping kids entertained is a very big next thing! Elizabeth recommends a Piñata as kids of all ages “enjoy them so much”. Pass the Parcel is a classic favourite while a Colouring in Table provides an activity they can come back to through out the duration of the party.

For the adults, we designed a custom Snapchat filter so their photos of the day were themed to Giselle’s Onderland. This was a huuuuuge hit. We adore this idea as an update and personal touch to photo booths for weddings and parties.
